Today I witnessed the protest in the USA for the first time. I was on a bus when the police were in a hurry to cross the street. The Market street was full of people and they all gathered around Bart station. I stopped the bus and went out to find out what’s going on. I followed the group of police and saw that they are going to Embarcadero direction and meeting protesters there.
Police were on a front line and the protesters marshed towards downtown behind the police. See the video here.
As I found out, following the protest in response to the agency’s interruption of cellphone service in Bart station, people organized a follow up protest again on August 15, 2011. But the main root of this protest was the shooting of homeless at a Bart by a police.
Protesters were very angry and they were able to express their angers directly to police. The most surprising part of this protest was that no one police said anything. They didn’t act, didn’t beat, didn’t arrested anyone. The were very silent. I even noticed a smile on a face of a policewoman.
Later I had a chance to talk to one of the policemen. He said that people have their own rights to protest and express themselves, we don’t arrest them because they have their own voice. And we can’t act without an order of a mayor. We are silent because our mayor ordered just to observe the protest and don’t let people to cause any accident. But if any protester will destroy any place or harm and injure someone, we can arrest him only under the order of our Mayor.
